Nvidia Invests in Taiwanese AI Startup MetAI and Strengths Ties with Taiwan's IT Industry
January 16, 2025
Nvidia has announced its first investment in a Taiwanese startup, backing MetAI in a USD 4 million seed round, as reported by TechCrunch on January 15. MetAI, specializing in AI-powered digital twins, has developed a groundbreaking model capable of rapidly converting CAD files into functional 3D environments, enabling quick simulations for advanced applications. The startup plans to leverage the funding to expand its R&D efforts and establish a U.S. office in 2025 to meet the growing demand for its AI-driven solutions in manufacturing, smart warehouses, and automation.

Meanwhile, Nvidia's relationship with Taiwan continues to deepen through several high-profile collaborations. Notably, the company is partnering with Taiwanese IC packaging giant Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL) to enhance AI chip production. Nvidia's CEO is reportedly attending the opening of SPIL's new plant in Taichung, Taiwan, which officially opened on January 16. In addition, Nvidia is scouting locations for its Asian headquarters in Taiwan, further solidifying its footprint in the region.

Nvidia's influence is also expanding across Asia, with plans to establish a sovereign AI park in Thailand using Taiwanese semiconductor chips and AI servers. This move builds on Taiwan's strategic role in Nvidia’s supply chain, particularly with contract chipmaker TSMC and electronics giant Foxconn. The Taipei-based Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) predicts Taiwan's share of global server shipments will remain above 80% from 2024 to 2027. Due to the ongoing US-China trade war, rising unit prices, and increased technological entry barriers for AI servers, Taiwan's global share of AI server shipments is expected to exceed 90% starting this year, according to MIC.
