Samsung Earmarks US$15 Bln Capex for 2010

Korea's Samsung Electronics said on May 17 that
it will increase its 2010 capex (capital expenditure) from 8.5 trillion Won
(US$7.1 billion; US$1=1,193.3 Won) to a record 18 trillion Won (US$15.1 billion),
Reuters reported. 11 trillion Won (US$9.2 billion) will be invested in its
semiconductor chip business, and the construction on a new chip plant has
already begun, the first for Samsung in five years. At the same time, Samsung's
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) investments will grow from three trillion Won (US$2.5
billion) to five trillion Won (US$4.2 billion). Counting in the spending on
R&D, Samsung's capital expenditure for 2010 is expected to amount to 26
trillion Won (US$21.8 billion) overall.
