3G/4G Development in China April 4-10
April 10, 2011

- Following China Mobile’s announcement that the company has been currently conducting large-scale trials on its TD-LTE (Time Division-Long Term Evolution) demonstration networks located in six Chinese cities, China’s MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) recently made an official statement that it approved 50Mhz spectrum ranging between 2,570Mhz and 2,620MHz as the operating spectrum for China Mobile’s demonstration networks, the Sina Tech News reported on April 7. Six cities include Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Ximan, with an additional demonstration network to be deployed in Beijing. Instead of 2.5Ghz/2.6GHz given for TD-LTE network demonstrations, China Mobile prefers 2.3Ghz frequency, which is equivalent to the frequency used by Russia-based Yota and US-based Sprint, in order for China Mobile to stand at the forefront of 4G development.

According to the same source, a TD-LTE working group has been established in China, led by China Academy of Telecommunication Research of China’s MIIT and China Mobile along with other members comprising China Telecom, China Unicom, 11 telecom equipment suppliers, 10 chipmakers, three terminal suppliers, one instrument supplier, the TD Industry Alliance, and the State Radio Monitoring Center. This working group of 31 members will implement TD-LTE related test and verification, thereby accelerating the commercialization of TD-LTE, according to the same source.
