TSMC to Expand 8-Inch Wafer Fab in Songjiang District, Shanghai
April 01, 2011

TSMC has filed an application with Shanghai government to start the second-phase expansion of its 8-inch wafer fab located in the city's Songjiang district, according to a March 29, 2011 report by the Commercial Times of Taiwan. It is reported that the Songjiang fab will mainly manufacture analog IC, LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) driver IC, and CMOC (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) sensors. The Songjiang fab was set up in 2003, and owing to relaxation of investment restrictions in September 2010 by Taiwan's MOEA (Ministry of Economic Affairs), TSMC is now allowed to upgrade the manufacturing processes of the Songjiang fab to 0.13 micro processes. Upon completion, the fab is estimated to produce 110,000 wafers per month, up from the current 50,000.
