Shanghai-headquartered semiconductor foundry SMIC (Semiconductor
Manufacturing International Corporation), local Chinese government, and US-based
Micron Technology are currently discussing over handing over SMIC's 12-inch
wafer fab located in Wuhan, China to Micron, according to a September 3, 2010
report by the Commercial Times of Taiwan. It is reported that Micron's acquisition
of Wuhan plant aims to build a complete production line of flash memory in China. If the
deal is confirmed, the Wuhan plant is expected to be used for NOR flash
production.
In related news, it is reported that SMIC's 8-inch wafer fab located in
Chengdu, China will be sold to TI. Both the 8-inch and 12-inch plants are owned
by local Chinese governments and managed by SMIC.
