HTC
announced on July 26, 2010 that the company has decided to use Super LCD
(Liquid Crystal Display) instead of AM-OLED (Active Matrix Organic Light
Emitting Display) panels on certain devices starting from the end of this
summer, according to the Commercial Times of Taiwan. It is reported that Super LCD
will be used in Smartphones with 3.7-inch screens, such as HTC Desire and Nexus
One. In order to cope with the shortage of AM-OLED displays manufactured by SMD
(Samsung Mobile Display), HTC chose to use Super LCD panels developed by Sony
to meet the increasing Smartphone demand.
Super
LCD panels are manufactured by S-LCD, a joint venture formed by Samsung and Sony.
S-LCD manufactures Super LCD panels in its 7G LCD Line, and the panels are
originally used on 32-inch and 42-inch LCD TV.
