Taiwanese semiconductor foundry UMC announced on July 15, 2010 that the
company is going to obtain 12-inch CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide
Semiconductor) manufacturing equipment from TI (Texas Instruments), according
to Economic Daily News of Taiwan. The order is estimated to cost UMC
approximately NT$1.29 billion (US$40.1 million; US$1= NT$32.1). The newly-purchased
equipment is said to be used for expanding UMC's annual production capacity in
Taiwan.
UMC also plans to further expand the capacity of its UMCi plant in
Singapore. UMC is expected to start the second-phase expansion project at Fab
12i, aiming to increase its production capacity to 100,000 wafers per month. It
is reported that UMC is going to invest more than US$3.6 billion in this
expansion project, and related details are expected to be finalized by the end
of 2010.
