IC designer MediaTek announced that it has officially joined Google-led Open
Handset Alliance on July 12, 2010, according to Economic Daily News of Taiwan.
It is reported that MediaTek plans to mass produce 2.75G chipset solutions for Android-based
mobile phones around the third quarter of 2010. Mass production of 3G chipsets is
slated for 2011. In February this year, MediaTek announced that it would join
hands with Microsoft on developing new multimedia Smartphone design. It is
reported that MediaTek has turned its eyes to the Android platform in light of market potential.
Currently,
more than 71 companies around the world have joined the Open Handset Alliance,
including HTC, Asus, LG, Samsung, and Motorola. MediaTek expects to further
strengthen its ties with these clients after joining the alliance.
