Corning
Taiwan announced on June 10, 2010 that the company plans to relaunch its
expansion project for the glass melting furnace factory located in Taichung,
according to Commercial Times of Taiwan. The expansion project was previously
halted due to the financial turmoil, but glass substrates have been in short
supply starting this year, and Corning expects to fulfill market demand with
the expansion project.
In
other Taiwan panel industry news, AUO said on June 10, 2010 that the company
plans to mass produce AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode)
mobile phone panels at its 3.5-generation plant, and the company expects to
begin shipment at the end of this year, according to Economic Daily News of
Taiwan. AUO purchased 100% stake of Singapore-based AFPD, a subsidiary of
Toshiba Mobile Display in the first quarter of 2010, according to the same
source. AFPD manufactures LTPS LCD (Low Temperature Polysilicon Liquid Crystal
Display) panels, and LTPS can be used as substrates for AMOLED.
