NTT DoCoMo, Renesas, Fujitsu, NEC, Panasonic Mobile, Sharp to Devise Mobile Apps Platform

Japanese telecom operator NTT DoCoMo, chipset
manufacturer Renesas Technology, and four electronics companies Fujitsu, NEC,
Panasonic Mobile, and Sharp announced on April 26 that they will jointly devise
a new application platform for next-generation mobile phones, according to a press
release by said companies. It is reported that the new platform will support
both the Symbian and Linux operating systems, while compatibility with open
source systems such as Google Android is being mulled, too. Advanced mobile
multimedia functionalities, such as enhanced video and 3D graphics processing
speeds, are expected to constitute main features of the new platform. The
developers plan to offer the platform to mobile phone manufacturers worldwide
and slate the commercial launch of products based on the new platform for the
second half of fiscal 2011, which ends in March 2012.
