ZTE, China Mobile Reveal Separate Telecom Equipment Procurement Orders for Taiwanese Manufacturers
April 09, 2010
- Following the Commercial Times' previous report dated May 13 that the Chinese delegation, comprised of representatives from China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom, Datang Telecom, ZTE, and Huawei, will have a two-day procurement meeting with Taiwanese telecom operators, notebook PC and communications equipment makers in June, ZTE recently revealed that the company will employ TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) and TD-LTE (TD-Long Term Evolution) chips developed by Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek for its wireless modules, according to another report by Taiwan's Commercial Times dated April 9. This indicates that Mediatek will enter the supply chain of ZTE in the TD-SCDMA wireless module segment. Currently, Spreadtrum is a major supplier of TD-SCDMA and TD-LTE chips for ZTE, while Mediatek is a supplier of 3G WCDMA (Wideband CDMA) chips for ZTE. According to the same source, the Chinese delegation also is poised to place purchase orders for 10 Taiwanese notebook PC makers, including Acer, Asus, Gigabyte, Compal, and Quanta.

According to the SinaCast Daily Business Beat reported on April 7, aside from ZTE, China Mobile also plans to procure terminal products based on TD-LTE technology from Taiwanese manufacturers, including Mediatek, VIA, Compal Electronics, Compal Communications, Gemtek, and Arcadyan. Further details regarding the total amount of the procurement orders, however, were not yet disclosed.
