Korean LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panel maker
LG Display has reportedly obtained approval from its board of directors to
spend US$4 billion on building an 8.5G LCD panel plant in Guangzhou Development
District in southern China, China Business News reported on October 14. The
management committee of Guangzhou Development District stressed that LG
Display's new LCD panel project will be an 8.5G facility instead of an 8G one
as previously reported. It is projected that initially the new plant will be
able to manufacture 60,000 LCD panels measuring 2.2 to 2.5 meters monthly, with
further plans for capacity expansion to 120,000 panels per month in the future.
Construction on the new plant is scheduled to begin in 2010 and commencement of
production is slated for 2012. However, LG Display's 8.5G LCD project in China
is still pending official approval from the Korean government as flat panel
display technology is currently a restricted technology in Korea and requires
permit for export overseas.
