UMC to Expand Production Capacity, Launch 40nm/45nm Processes in Singapore

Taiwanese semiconductor foundry UMC announced on
October 8 that it will begin production capacity expansion and introduce 40nm
and 45nm manufacturing processes at its Fab 12i in Singapore, United Daily News
of Taiwan reported. UMC's Fab 12i was the first 12-inch wafer fab in Singapore.
Construction was completed in April 2002 and production began in 2003. Currently
the fab is engaged in 55nm and 65nm production, with a capacity of 31,000
wafers per month. UMC, nevertheless, did not disclose the scale of investment
in this project nor the timetable for completion.
