September 11, 2009
Taiwanese chip manufacturer TSMC has landed a contract production order for Sun Microsystems' new 16-core microprocessor, Commercial Times of Taiwan reported on September 7. Codenamed Rainbow Falls, Sun Microsystems' new microprocessor is a 16-core RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) chip with 128-thread operating capability for high-end servers. TSMC is expected to manufacture the Rainbow Falls microprocessor on 40nm process technology. TSMC first began collaboration with Sun Microsystems in February 2008, and it is reported that the Rainbow Falls microprocessor deal marks the Taiwanese foundry's first foray into microprocessor production.
