Korea's LG Display has begun equipment
installation at its fourth LTPS (Low Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon) LCD
(Liquid Crystal Display) production line at the company's Paju LCD complex in
Gyeonggi Province, according to a press release by LG Display on August 12. It
is estimated that the company will invest over 577.1 billion Won (US$465.8
million; US$1=1239 Won) in the new LTPS facility. Mass production is scheduled
for the first quarter of 2010, with a projected capacity of 20,000 panels per
month. According to a Nikkei report, the crystallization technology used in LTPS
enables thin, light, and compact LCD applications, such as in mobile phones and
Smartphones. LTPS also features high resolution due to its fast mobility and
high aperture ratio.
Meanwhile, LG Display also announced an
investment of around 90 billion Won (US$72.6 million) in a 3.5G AM-OLED (Active
Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) production line. Mass production at the
new AM-OLED line is also slated for the first quarter of 2010. Target of
monthly production capacity is set at 8,000 panels by the year-end.
