August 07, 2009
Taiwan's Winbond Electronics announced on August
4 that the company's board has approved the deal to enter a GDRAM (Graphic
Dynamic Random Access Memory) product transfer and technology licensing agreement
with Germany's Qimonda, Taiwan's Apple Daily reported. GDRAM products using the
GDDR (Graphic Double Data Rate) specification mainly finds application in high-end
PC products, graphic cards, and game consoles that call for advanced memory and
graphics performance. It is reported that through the agreement with Qimonda, Winbond
expects to reduce the company's reliance on standard DRAM products, which
presently accounts for around 25% to 30% of its 32,000-unit output per month. Moreover,
as Japan's Elpida is expected to acquire Qimonda's GDRAM business in the near
future, it is projected that Winbond will continue to seek GDRAM contract
manufacturing orders from Elpida and extend the two companies' collaboration to
the development of next-generation DRAM technology, according to the Apple
Daily report.
