3G Development in China April 13-19

- Chinese networking and telecom equipment supplier Huawei announced on April 9 that the company was rewarded a 44% share of the tender invited by China Unicom for data cards supporting WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) standard, according to the China Business News reported on April 10. Meanwhile, ZTE also stated that it won a similar share of the tender. China Unicom began to invite bids for the first phase of network equipment purchase, including data cards, in April 2009. Aside from data cards, the telecom operator is set to reveal the result of its tender for mobile phones at the end of April 2009, which is expected to include branded phones manufactured by Dopod, Nokia, Samsung, and Coolpad.

- China Telecom announced on April 17 that the company has begun the commercialization of its CDMA2000 service in China's 120 cities, according to the Xinhua News. China Telecom expects its 3G service to cover more than 300 cities within the next three months, according to the same source.

Furthermore, China Telecom also stated that it will boost its investment in the deployment of CDMA base stations by 80% by the end of July 2009, according to another Xinhua News report.

Guangdong Telecom, a subsidiary of China Telecom in Guangdong, announced that it aims to achieve CDMA full coverage by the end of June 2009. So far, the company's network coverage has included 15 major cities, including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, and Zhuhai. Meanwhile, China Telecom's subsidiary in Jinan has officially launched the 3G service in Jinan city, Shandong province, the Xinhua News reported on April 10

- China Mobile's second phase TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) network deployment is due to be completed soon, with its coverage including 28 cities in China, the Xinhua News reported on April 4. Meanwhile, the company stated that the company has been in preparation for the upcoming third-phase TD-SCDMA network deployment, including identifying locations for base stations. China Mobile also plans to offer a pan-China coverage by increase TD-SCDMA base stations to 160,000 units by the year-end 2011, up from 40,000 at present, according to the same source.
