3G Development in China April 6-12

- In the wake of the commercialization of its 3G service based on CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology in Jiangsu and Beijing, China Telecom recently also launched the 3G service in the Tianjin city, with its service coverage including the Binhai New Area, the Xinhua News reported on April 8. China Telecom's subscribers in Tianjin can access three types of network services, including CDMA2000, WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network), and CDMA 1X. Meanwhile, China Telecom's subsidiary in Guangdong, which was set to roll out 3G services in early April, will delay the rollout until the end of April, 2009, according to the same source.
- China Mobile has rolled out a week-long nationwide promotional activity for TD-SCMDA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access), beginning on April 7, the Sina Tech reported on April 9. On April 7, Beijing Mobile, a subsidiary of China Mobile in Beijing, debuted six netbook PCs manufactured by Lenovo, HP, Dell, Samsung, Tsinghua Tongfang, and MSI at its 12 business locations, with a price tag ranging between 2,000 RMB (US$292.5; US$1 = 6.84 RMB) and 4,000 RMB (US$585.0). On the same day, China Mobile began inviting bids for the supply of TD-SCDMA netbook PCs. Aside from these six PC makers, it is anticipated that at least another four PC makers will be selected to supply TD-SCDMA netbook PCs to China Mobile, according to the same source. Further details regarding the tender offer, however, were not yet known.
