Abstract

Taiwanese makers expanded capacity, expecting that digital camera shipments would continue the 93% growth seen in 2003. Instead, primary markets in North America, Europe, and Japan gradually cooled. Uncertain orders and shrinking profits forced some Taiwanese digital camera makers to exit the market in the second half of 2004. Though shipment growth reached 25.3% in 2004, low product profitability and continuing uncertainty over new orders left makers pessimistic about their ability to survive. In 2005 global digital camera markets are expected to grow, but the future will continue to be treacherous terrain for Taiwanese makers.
