Abstract

This report presents worldwide mobile phone subscriber base, including a review of recent years and a forecast for the period 2009-2013, with breakdowns by system technology and region. It examines mobile phone subscriber base and share by system technology for all the world's main regions, including North America, Latin America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa, and Asia Pacific (including Japan). The report finds that growth momentum of global mobile phone subscribers is expected to slow after 2009. As for WCDMA, mobile operators are expected to deploy HDSPA as the upgrade from WCDMA to HSDPA only requires a software upgrade; the fast expansion of WCDMA/HSPA networks have indirectly affected GSM/GPRS/EDGE subscriber additions. Regarding CDMA, most CDMA mobile operators have expressed their interest in adopting LTE as their 4G technology. CDMA's share of total mobile phone systems is expected to continue decreasing and the number of new CDMA/EV-DO subscribers is yet to compensate for the loss in CDMA One/CDMA 1x subscribers.
