Abstract

The worldwide WiMAX subscriber base reached nearly 2.93 million in the third quarter of 2008, representing a year-on-year growth rate of 99% and a sequential growth rate of 9,9%. The number of WiMAX subscribers in Asia overtook that in North America starting in the second quarter of 2008. The top seven carriers worldwide account for about 53.1% of the overall subscriber base. 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz remained the most prevalent WiMAX spectrums, covering over 90% of all WiMAX subscribers. Pre-WiMAX technology currently dominated the market, but 802.16e is projected to see substantial growth in the future. WISPs and traditional telecom carriers were the most aggressive WiMAX players in terms of network deployment and subscriber coverage. Motorola was the leading equipment vendor, covering about 43.8% of the worldwide WiMAX subscriber base, followed by Alvarion, Samsung, and Cisco-Navini.
