Abstract

Owing to manufacturers ramping up production in response to the year-end peak retail season, the Chinese mobile phone industry's shipment volume experienced a marked increase during the fourth quarter of 2002. In a bid to raise market share, domestic handset makers have greatly expanded production capacity. In the process, Chinese makers have succeeded in accounting for a greater share of Chinese mobile phone industry production. This report will present analyses of design origins for handset makers in China, as well as production locations of Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Taiwanese makers, and international vendors. The effects of worldwide peak season and Chinese new year demand are also examined.

Chinese makers are anticipated to join in and compete fiercely for a share of peak season demand in the Chinese market during the first quarter of 2003. This will likely contribute to raising shipment volume even higher than in the fourth quarter of 2002, when US and Western European vendors increased production to meet global peak season demand.

In 2003, Samsung is expected to challenge Siemens for third place in the handset manufacturer rankings, while TCL is anticipated to hound Bird for the top spot among domestic makers. By the end of the peak season in May, Chinese handset manufacturers are likely to have either built an impressive market share or created a serious inventory problem.

CDMA handsets and color screens are expected to be the main focus of attention in the future. GSM handset manufacturers will likely need to monitor the impact of CDMA and PHS handsets on sales. In addition, suppliers of monochrome and STN color displays are expected to be impacted by the gradual replacement by LCD panels, which will require heightened care toward inventory management.
