Abstract

In 2004, a total of 233 million mobile phones were produced in China, accounting for one-third of total global production. China has thus established itself as the world's largest mobile phone production center. However, China is still almost totally dependent on imports for key handset ICs such as baseband and transceivers. As China's importance within the global handset supply chain has increased, leading handset component suppliers such as TI, Freescale, Philips and RFMD have begun to set up production facilities, R&D facilities and distribution channels in China. This report will analyze the current state of these suppliers' China-based operations.
