Abstract

In 2004, the leading Korean and Japanese mobile handset vendors - including Samsung, LG and NEC - began to step up the development of their China operations. Samsung has already established itself as a first-tier vendor that can compete effectively against Nokia and Motorola; NEC anticipates that the emergence of the 3G handset market will provide the opportunity it needs to move up into the ranks of the leading handset vendors. This report examines the production and R&D activities of the leading Korean and Japanese handset vendors in China, analyzing and comparing the strategies adopted by the individual vendors.
