Abstract

Amid seasonal effects in the US and Europe and demand in emerging markets, global handset shipment reached a record 180 million units in the fourth quarter of 2004. Taiwanese handset shipment posted 15.3 million units, accounting for 8.4% of the global market. Throughout 2004, Motorola and Sony Ericsson adjusted their product lines and Chinese customers reduced their procurement of knock-down kits. Taiwanese handset shipments thus reached 52.3 million units, growing at a rate of lower than 10%. In 2005, as brand-name vendors increase their in-house R&D activities, and EMS providers and Chinese design houses continue to compete for business, Taiwanese mobile phone industry growth is expected to hit low gear.
