Abstract

Focusing on core technology development and relying mainly on the sales of their own-brand products have been a thing of the past for Japanese component makers as Japanese brands' losing shine in the international market has its toll on their component businesses, for instance Sharp's panel division. In order to survive, Sharp has been eagerly seeking funds and several overseas investors have shown interests in investing into Sharp, including its long-time rival Samsung. Other than Samsung, Chinese and Taiwanese brands also are seeking opportunities to cooperate with Japanese vendors. This report profiles the impacts of current events on the global industry and examines the consequences of the Samsung-Sharp deal on branded vendors in Taiwan, Japan, and China.
