Abstract

In the second quarter of 2005 shipment volume of the Taiwanese small and medium panel industry reached 147 million units, growing 7.4% year-on-year and 21.0% sequentially, owing to demand for value-line and mid-range handsets as well as mp3 players, DSCs (Digital Still Camera), DVCs (Digital Video Camcorder), and portable DVD (Digital Versatile Disk) players. Shipment value rose 25.2% year-on-year and declined 17.1% sequentially to approximately US$1.3 billion. The industry is facing intense pressure from price competition; thus, despite growth in value, the pace of increase is still lower than volume gains.    Although ASP (Average Selling Price) rose 16.2% year-on-year to US$8.6 in the second quarter, ASP still declined a slight 3.4% from the first quarter of 2005. This drop resulted chiefly from the increase in passive matrix orders intended for Nokia, Motorola, and Sony Ericsson's mid-range and value-line phones. Prices on a-Si TFT LCD (Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display) also declined.
