Abstract

In the third quarter of 2009, the Taiwanese server industry's shipment volume and value continued to suffer from year-on-year declines. However, when compared with the first and second quarters of 2009, third-quarter shipment volume of the server industry, including sever systems and server motherboards, began to see a slight rebound in the third quarter of 2009. As a result, Taiwanese server full system and barebone shipment volume reached 718,400 units, representing a 7.9% year-on-year decline but a 14.5% sequential growth. This indicated that brand-name server vendors and contract makers' efforts to control inventory levels have paid off, leading to the gradual easing of the supply-demand imbalance. Meanwhile, with the support of the economy stimulation measures taken by governments worldwide, the strong economic performance in Asia, especially China, server vendors continued to outsource production of x86 servers and data centers to Taiwanese makers, benefiting the industry's shipment volume. Consequently, Taiwanese server motherboard shipment volume is expected to have reached 1.04 million units in the third quarter of 2009, up 6.3% sequentially but down 8.1% year-on-year.
