Abstract

Impacted by the US subprime mortgage woe and frustrated consumer confidence resulting from soaring oil and material prices, the growth of corporate server procurement has begun to slacken in the second half of 2008, in contrast to the relatively stable demand previously. Shipment volume of the Taiwanese server system products, including both full systems and barebones, advanced 7.8% year-on-year and 0.3% sequentially to approximately 773,700 units in the second quarter of 2008. Brand-name vendors further increased their contract production orders for x86 servers in the second quarter. Shipment volume of server motherboards grew 6.7% year-on-year and 2.0% sequentially to about 1.14 million units during the same quarter. Attracted by the Taiwanese makers' capacity, Google, Rackable Systems, and some other major companies have adopted Taiwanese makers' server motherboards for several projects.
