Abstract

Benefiting from strong demand in the global PC market, the shipment performance of the Taiwanese ODD (Optical Disc Drive) industry in the first half of 2005 was superior to that in the first half of 2004. With leading PC vendors awarding substantial orders to Taiwanese drive makers, the industry's total shipment volume in the first half of the year rose to 52.3 million units, representing a year-on-year growth rate of 6%. However, ASP (Average Selling Price) continued to fall, while the industry's shipment value grew by only 1% year-on-year, rising to approximately US$16.9 million. DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) burners ?the average price of which has been falling rapidly ?have replaced CD-ROM devices as the mainstream product in the optical drive market.
