Desktop Replacement Fuels Unseasonable Growth for Notebook PCs
August 08, 2005

Although spring and early summer are traditionally weak seasons for notebook PCs, in the second quarter of 2005 worldwide shipment volume saw a larger increase than forecasted as major brands tried to increase their market share by using low-price strategies, strengthening the desktop replacement effect. Taiwanese notebook PC ODM/OEM makers profited from this trend as well. Market Intelligence Center, a Taipei-based ICT industry research institute, estimated the Taiwanese notebook PC shipment volume and value reached 20 million units and US$13.1 billion in the first half of 2005, which represents year-on-year growth of 40%.

Shipment value grew sequentially as shipment volume increased in the second quarter of 2005. ASP (Average Selling Price) fell as the price of key components decreased, but the growing share of full systems slowed down this decline. Taiwanese notebook PC shipment value reached approximately US$7 billion, meaning year-on-year growth of 44.6%.

Major brands' price competition and Intel's strategy of pairing CPUs with their own chipsets made the clone market shrink, negatively influencing the performance of second tier Taiwanese makers who mainly focus on the clone segment. First tier Taiwanese makers had a strong performance however, with their combined market share growing to 84.1%.

Looking ahead to the third quarter of 2005, according to MIC, the market is forecasted to have a very good showing, not only due to the traditional peak season and back-to-school demand, but also because of the development of wireless applications and the continuing effects of desktop replacement. Furthermore, Intel's supply strategy will continue into the second half of the year. Although this is good news for the major brands, it is uncertain whether this will also have positive effects on emerging and value-line markets. Shipment volume is forecasted to grow by 38.9% year-on-year and 12.4% sequentially.
