Resolution of Component Shortage Brings Delayed Uptick in Notebook PC Volume
May 03, 2005
Taiwanese notebook PC industry shipment volume will achieve 7.1% sequential growth and rise 38.1% year-on-year to 10.2 million units in the second quarter of 2005, according to Market Intelligence Center (MIC), a Taipei-based ICT industry research house. The projected rise from the first quarter is partly attributed to holdover demand that will surface once component shortages are fully resolved after April.

"Sales will be further driven by the desktop replacement effect, which is intensifying with the increasing adoption of wireless functionality and the lower prices generated by a weaker dollar," said Clinton Lin, an industry analyst with MIC. "Strong growth will also be particularly evident in Europe and Asia Pacific markets," added Lin.

The second quarter continues a trend witnessed in the first quarter of 2005. In addition the rollout of the Alviso platform, a certain degree of relief in the component shortage that plagued fourth quarter shipments eased the traditional seasonal downturn, says MIC.

MIC estimates that shipment volume declined 8.8% sequentially in the first quarter of 2005, compared to a fall in excess of 16% sequentially during the same period in 2004. Taiwanese notebook PC industry shipment volume totaled 9.5 million units in the first quarter, 39.7% growth year-on-year.

First quarter average selling price (ASP) continued to fall due to lower key component prices. Taiwanese notebook PC shipment value hit just over US$6.5 billion, 37.3% growth year-on-year, according to MIC.

The Taiwanese notebook PC industry demonstrated an increase in industry concentration in the first quarter. First-tier makers Quanta, Compal, and Wistron, collectively accounted for 67% of total shipment volume. "Beyond their scale advantages, makers in the first and second tiers are also benefiting from increased own-brand sales, a higher level of outsourcing from Japanese brands, and more orders from European clone players," said Lin.
