Nearly 70% of Taiwanese Netizens Play Digital Games, with 77% Preferring Mobile Games: MIC
July 23, 2024

Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) has released its latest consumer survey on digital gaming. According to the findings, a significant 69% of Taiwanese netizens have a habit of playing digital games, with mobile games leading as the most popular type at 77%. This figure notably surpasses other types such as computer games (25%), console games (17%), and web games (12%). Mobile games are the most commonly played across all age groups, with over 80% of individuals aged 36-55 being particularly engaged.

Which types of digital games have you played most frequently in the past year?
(multiple choices, up to three options)

Note 1: The valid player sample size was 739 in 2023, 916 in 2022, and 1,365 in 2021.
Note 2: Commercial gaming machines were not included as an option in 2021, so no comparative data is available.
Note 3: Commercial gaming machines refer to arcade machines such as those found at Tom's World and Huro World, or coin-operated machines like Pokemon arcade machines, but do not include claw machines.

The survey reveals a growing trend over the past three years, with the gap between mobile games and other game types widening significantly. The difference between mobile and computer games has increased from 23% in 2021 to 52% in 2023. Senior industry analyst Chen-Yu Chang notes that with various entertainment options available, including long and short-form videos and social media, players' attention to games is increasingly dispersed. Given the ongoing trend towards causal gaming, mobile games are expected to remain the long-term preferred choice for netizens in Taiwan.

Note: The survey was conducted in 4Q 2023 via an online questionnaire, with a sample size of 1,068 valid responses. The margin of error is ±3.0% at a 95% confidence level.
