Rise of "Casual Gaming" Trend in Taiwan with Top Three Motivations for Gaming Identified: MIC
July 23, 2024

Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) has released its latest consumer survey on digital gaming. According to the findings, netizens’ gaming durations indicates a noticeable rise in "casual gaming," where nearly 80% of players spend less than 2 hours per day on games, marking a 5% annual growth. Conversely, the number of "hardcore gamers" who play for 4-5 hours or more daily has decreased by 1.6%.

Further analysis of mobile and computer game consumer behaviors shows that the top three motivations for gaming are "free access, playability during spare time, and quality game experience." The most frequently played game genres are "puzzle and strategy (36%), simulation (22%), and role-playing (21%)." Chang further explains that 61% of mobile gamers prefer free games, a decrease of 5% compared to the previous year. This shift is attributed to the fragmentation of entertainment time. Gamers now are more willing to pay more to obtain quick in-game achievements.

How much time do you spend on average playing video games (including mobile games, computer games, console games, etc.) per day (excluding idle time)? (Single choice)

Note: The valid sample size was 739 in 2023, 916 in 2022, and 1,365 in 2021.

Note: The survey was conducted in 4Q 2023 via an online questionnaire, with a sample size of 1,068 valid responses. The margin of error is ±3.0% at a 95% confidence level.
