NTT DoCoMo Forms LTE Chip JV with Samsung and Four Others
December 30, 2011

NTT DoCoMo announced that it plans to set up a fabless JV by the end of March 2012 with Samsung, Fujitsu, Fujitsu Semiconductor, NEC, and Panasonic Mobile Communications so as to design and market semiconductor products for use in mobile devices, according to a statement released by the company on 27 December, 2011. With an aim to lower the reliance on components provided by Qualcomm, the JV plans to develop products supporting both LTE (Long Term Evolution) and LTE-advanced high-speed mobile communication standards. NTT DoCoMo will invest approximately US$5.8 million to establish a wholly owned subsidiary by the middle of January 2012 in preparation for the new JV, said the company. Further details, however, were not yet disclosed.
