Taiwan Speeds Up in Smart Grid Deployment

Taiwan's MOEA (Ministry of Economic Affairs) announced on 19 December, 2011 that the government plans to invest approximately NT$139.9 billion (US$4.6 billion; US$1 = NT$30.2) in the next 20 years in the development of domestic smart grid infrastructure and technologies beginning in 2012, the Central News Agency of Taiwan reported. The smart grid investment is reported to focus on technology R&D, smart grid efficiency improvement, and smart grid industry promotion. MOEA estimates that the project will enable the smart grid industry to generate output value of around NT$1 trillion (US$33.1 billion) by 2030. An AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) initiative is currently carried out by the government, and the initiative is slated to complete by 2030.
