Sony and Toshiba jointly announced on February 28, 2011 that Toshiba will transfer a semiconductor fabrication plant, located in Isahaya, Nagasaki Prefecture, to Sony, according to a press release by Sony. The transfer deal is valued at 53 billion yen (US$647.9 million; US$1=81.8 yen) and is projected to be finalized by April 1, 2011. The fab was sold by Sony to Toshiba in 2008 for 90 billion yen (US$1.1 billion). Currently, the fab mainly manufactures chips for use in Sony PlayStation consoles, and it is reported that Sony plans to further strengthen the fab's production capacity for CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) image sensors used for Smartphones and digital cameras.
