Toshiba Mobile Display to Frozen OLED Panel Production; Shift Focus to LCD
October 08, 2010
Toshiba Mobile Display announced on October 1, 2010 that the company is going to stop its OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) mass production plan and re-evaluate the entire plan from scratch, according to Reuters. It is reported that Toshiba will put emphasis on mid- to small-sized LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) production instead in a bid to tap surging market demand. Toshiba is projected to transfer the staff involved in OLED R&D to LCD panel division.

Toshiba Mobile Display invested approximately 16 billion Yen (US$193 million; US$1=82.9 Yen) in setting up an OLED production line with Panasonic in 2008, according to the same source. The OLED plant was initially aimed to produce 1.5 million OLED panels each year.
