Samsung Says Farewell to e-Paper Production
August 26, 2010
Korean Samsung Electronics announced on August 23 that the company decided to forego its e-paper production due to relatively high production costs compared to the manufacturing of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panels, the Yonhap News reported on August 23. In addition, Samsung stated that company will continue its e-book reader business, planning to launch a new e-book reader using LCD panel instead of costly e-paper sometime in 2011. Other than the concern of production costs, e-paper is currently available only in black and white, unlike LCD panels, which support a variety of colors, according to the same source. LG Display, however, declined to reveal further details regarding the reason behind the decision to stop e-paper production as well as the size or other specs of the forthcoming e-book model.
