Samsung Mobile Display, a JV formed between Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDI, held a ground breaking ceremony for its new 5.5G production line for AM-OLED (Active Matrix-Organic Light-Emitting Diode) displays, with an aim to tap the burgeoning demand for AM-OLED Smartphones panels, the Maeil Business Newspaper reported on June 22, adding that the investment for this new facility is valued at around 2.5 trillion Won (US$2.11 billion; US$1= 1183.2 Won). Located at Samsung's Tangjeong Complex in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, the new facility occupies a land area of 138,600 square meters and is projected to begin production in July 2011. Upon completion, the Asan facility is expected to deliver a monthly capacity of 70,000 panels on a 1300x1500 mm glass substrate basis or of 30 million three-inch AM-OLED mobile phone panels, according to the same source.

Samsung's Asan facility is located at the same premises as its other production facilities, including LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) production lines operated by Samsung Electronics and LCD glass substrate production lines operated by Samsung Corning Precision Materials at the Tangjeong Complex. The land area of Samsung's Tangjeong Complex currently is totaled 2.48 million square meters and the company has preserved an additional land area of 2.11 million square meters for its second display complex in the future, according again to the Maeil Business Newspaper.
