Sony, Seiko Finalize LCD Strategic Agreement
July 03, 2009
In a continuation of the announcement made by Sony in March 2009 that it would begin talks with Seiko to form a LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) strategic alliance, Sony announced on June 30 that they have entered into an agreement whereby Seiko will transfer some of its small- and medium-size LCD operations to Sony by April 2010, JCN Newswire reported on June 30. No payment is involved in the deal though. Pursuant to the agreement, Seiko plans to transfer the sales of the said business to Sony by year-end 2009 first. Certain assets of Seiko, including its plant at Tottori, intellectual properties, and employees in the small- and medium-size LCD business will be handed over to Sony before the completion of the deal on April 2010, according to the same source. Seiko's high-temperature polysilicon TFT-LCDs, however, are not included in the deal.
