AUO to Resume OLED R&D in 4Q 2008
August 29, 2008
Following its decision to discontinue the R&D for OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) panels two years ago, Taiwanese LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panel maker AUO recently announced its plan to resume the operation in the fourth quarter of 2008, Taiwan's Commercial Times reported on August 29.

Aside from AUO, Taiwanese CMEL, Japanese Sharp and Sony, and Korean LG Display all unveiled their investment plans for 3.5G and 4G OLED production lines in the first half of 2008. Panels based on the OLED technology are mostly used for small-sized applications such as mobile phones by brand-name vendors including Nokia, Samsung, and LG. Meanwhile, Sony has launched an 11-inch OLED TV, and it is reported that Toshiba's OLED TV featuring a 30-inch panel will be available in 2009.
