Japanese Sony announced on October 15 the commencement of mass production at its new LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) TV plant in Nitra, western Slovakia.

According to AFX News, the production lines currently operating in the nearby Trnava plant are scheduled to be relocated in the new Nitra plant soon. After the relocation, Sony's LCD TV production in Europe will be centered in two plants -in Nitra and in Barcelona, Spain.

With a total investment of 73 million Euros (US$104.3 million; US$1 = 0.7 Euro), the new facility is expected to turn out three million large-sized LCD TVs per year and employ around 3,000 workers by year-end 2008.

Production of tuners for LCD TVs and technical support for PlayStation products are expected to carry on at the Trnava plant.
