Samsung SDI Begins Mass Producing AM-OLED Panels
October 12, 2007
Korean display panel maker Samsung SDI announced on October 10 that it has begun mass producing AM-OLED (Active Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) panels. Samsung aims to replace LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panels with AM-OLED panels for use in mobile phones and other handheld devices.

According to Korea's Chosun Ilbo, the company plans to double its monthly capacity from the current 1.5 million to 3.0 million units by 2008. Other than Samsung SDI, LPL (LG.Philips LCD), Sony, and TMD (Toshiba Matsushita Display) also begin mass production of AM-OLED panels.

It is believed that AM-OLED panels are capable of providing clearer display visibility even under direct sunlight as compared with LCD or plasma display panels. According to MIC (Market Intelligence Center), AM-OLED display technology provides various high-performance features, including a 180?/SPAN>/180?/SPAN> viewing angle, response time of <0 ms, contrast ratio of 10,000:1, and 100% color saturation. In addition, AM-OLED panels boast a lifespan of 30,000 hours, with brightness reaching 150cd/m2 or more.
