Sony to Commercialize 3mm-thick OLED TV in December
October 05, 2007
Sony announced on October 1 that it will soon commercialize an ultrathin OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) TV, codenamed XEL-1. Boasting a thickness of merely 3mm, Sony's new product is slated for shipping in Japan starting in December 1, 2007, according to a press release by the company.

Featuring a 11-inch screen and a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, Sony's new OLED TV incorporates the company's proprietary Super Top Emission technology, which realizes high peak brightness by achieving faithful reproductions of light flows. XEL-1, which the company claims to be the world's first commercialized OLED TV, is expected to be priced at around 200,000 Yen (US$1,716.6; US$1 = 116.5 Yen). The lifespan of XEL-1 is estimated at over three years when operating for 10 hours per day.

Further details as to the projected rollout schedule in other regions were not yet disclosed.
