Sharp to Build World's First 10G LCD Panel Plant in Japan
August 03, 2007
According to a Nikkei report, Sharp recently announced that it plans to spend approximately 380 billion Yen (US$ 3.2 billion; US$1 = 119.1 Yen) constructing a 10G LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panel plant, which will be located in a new industrial complex in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, Japan. 10G glass substrates are 60% larger than the 8G ones and can yield six 60-inch or 15 40-inch panels for each substrate. Sharp's 10G plant is expected to be the first of its kind worldwide. Construction is scheduled to commence in November this year, and production to start by March 2010. An initial monthly capacity of 35,000 units has been planned, which is projected to expand to 72,000 units in the future.

Furthermore, with an overall investment of some 600 billion Yen (US$5.03 billion), the new industrial complex aims to achieve vertical integration for the manufacturing of LCD products. So far, known participants include Corning, Dai-Nippon Printing, and Kansai Electric Power.
