Japanese Research Institute Unveils OEL Element for Handset Displays
April 04, 2007
The Tokyo-based research facility National Institute of AIST (Advanced Industrial Science and Technology) recently announced that it has developed an OEL (Organic Electroluminescent) element prototype for mobile phone display backlights. The new invention, claimed to be six times brighter than currently available OEL elements, generates 1,800 candelas per square meter, and is said to provide more directionality, making it possible to use only one polarizing filter instead of two in a backlight, which could further reduce the weight of a mobile phone.
