Sharp to Expand LCD Capacity in Japan and Mexico

As a follow up to an Asia Express dated January 13, 2006, Sharp announced that it plans to build a third LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) production line at its second Kameyama plant in Mie Prefecture, Japan, aiming to boost the monthly capacity of this plant to 90,000 units by mid-2008. As part of its plans to reach an annual capacity of nine million units worldwide in fiscal year 2007, which runs from April 2007 through March 2008, the company will open its second LCD plant in Mexico, for eight billion Yen (US$66.2 million; US$1 = 120.9 Yen), out of total investments of 200 billion Yen (US$1.6 billion). Both the Mexican plant and the third production line in Japan will become operational in July 2007.
