Hitachi has developed a handset LCD panel with a photo sensor embedded in the substrate. Unlike existing LCD panels which place the photo sensor on the LCD module, this model produced by Hitachi has the sensor embedded inside the substrate, thus reducing the size of the panel and the amount of components needed. Shipment of sample products is slated for the second half of 2006. Photo sensors used by Hitachi are capable of automatically adjusting brightness of the display panel, for example when a person enters or exits a tunnel.
