CCTV Signs Contract with Matsushita for HDTV Broadcasting

China Central Television (CCTV) recently signed a contract with Japanese Matsushita to expand the coverage of high-definition TV broadcasts in China. Matsushita will provide CCTV with technology and equipment including high-definition TVs and set-top boxes. CCTV is currently testing high-definition broadcasts in the city of Hangzhou, and it plans to launch its first high-definition TV channel in January 2006, after which the number of channels will be increased to about 50 within several months. CCTV plans to air the 2008 Olympic Games via high-definition broadcasts.
